National School Counseling Week 2026 - Christi Smith (VHS)

School counselors help students in more ways than you may know. This week we celebrate them as a part of National School Counseling Week 2026. This week, we'll hear from some of our school counselors and learn more about how they support our students and families. Today, Vestal High School Counselor/Counseling and Guidance Chair, Christi Smith answers questions about the important role school counselors play in helping students navigate academics, college, career, post-secondary planning and mental health.
What role do you play in college, career, and post-secondary planning?
Counselors play a significant role in helping students plan and prepare for their path post-graduation. We help students research colleges, careers, and the trades and/or military experiences. We provide opportunities for career and college fairs, shadowing opportunities, guest speakers etc. It is our goal to provide students with opportunities that help them to explore new experiences. Students have so many options these days that we try to expose them to as many things as possible.
How do you support students with academic planning and graduation requirements?
Counselors are responsible for meeting with every student each year whether it is in small groups or individually to go over their pathways to graduation. Counselors help students navigate different hurdles that students may face with regards to Regents exams or struggling in different classes. Counselors continue to meet and monitor students progress every five weeks as well. We help encourage students to try new and challenging courses to help broaden their horizons. We are their cheerleaders! We want all students to achieve and be as successful as they possibly can be. We are right by their side each step of the way.
How do you help students manage stress, mental health, and balance in life?
Counselors help students manage stress and mental health concerns on a daily basis. Counselors help students with relaxation techniques as well as helping students to learn how to schedule their time, prioritize their activities, and by providing healthy outlets. Our offices are filled with fidgets and calming options when students are having a rough time. We can help students talk through different situations and provide options for them to pursue. Sometimes students just need to talk through a scenario, and they don’t want any suggestions. School Counselors can also help by recommending outside resources to students and families in need.
What do you want families and students to better understand about your role?
School Counselors wear many hats! We are here to help each student reach their potential and to achieve success at the high school level. We love watching students pursue their dreams and we are here to help process any struggles they may have along the way. School counselors have master’s degrees in their field. We help bridge families to teachers and resources. We can provide a comprehensive support system for all students. We do so much more than scheduling!
